What is Social Studies about at Palmer?

Social Studies at Palmer is not about just learning Canada's history and then slapping the information on a poster, it will teach Socials in a way where students will feel as if there going back in time and exploring, witnessing and re-living the history. Students will learn Social Studies in a way that will help them exceed in there skills. This course will dive deep into the depts of Socials and truly learn and feel the art of it.

Grade 8-9

In grade 8, Social Studies is mixed with English which we call Humanities, this is changed once they reach grade 9 as now they have Social Studies and English (more information about this subject on English 9-10 Page) separate. This means that they will now be focusing on a higher understanding level of Social Studies. â€‹

Grade 10-12

Once students reach grade 10-12, they will be exploring a much more complex version of Socials. the courses are called, Social Studies 10, Explorations in Social Studies 11, 20th Century World History 12, Law 12, and BC First Peoples 12.

In grade 8-9, these core competencies will be the building blocks to students Social Studies success,

Communication, Thinking, and Personal and Social core competencies. Here is a broken down explanation of each competency:

Communication will teach students skills such as presenting information and ideas with confidence and understanding the connections between language and culture.

Thinking will teach students to come up with new different ideas.

Personal will teach students to incorporate Social Studies aspects into there daily lives.

Social will help them make new connections with people.

As the grade goes up, these four main skills will be all that students see when doing/taking Socials.
